Looking back on 2024

January 10:  Received 2nd epidural steroid injection of lidocaine (numbing agent) and dexamethasone (steroid) into the epidural space.  The goal is to reduce the pain in my lower back.  Procedure was called L5-S1 ILESI (InterLaminar Epidural Steroid Injection) medial.

Note:  This 2nd injection was a further improvement in reducing back pain when walking and standing.

January 17:  Finished reading "Lone Rider" by Elspeth Beard, I read the Kindle book on my iPhone 12, I read this book based on a recommendation by friend Jimmy Jeffers.  The book is about one of the first women to ride a motorcycle around the world.  She left her family and friends in London and set off in October 1982 (starting her ride from New York City, to California) at 23 years old on her 1974 BMW R60/6 (600cc) and arrived home in London in November 1984 after covering 35,000 miles and 20 countries.  An incredible journey and an amazing story.  She was a very determined person.  The book wasn't published until 2017 (2018 USA), 33 years after her journey was over.  She carried a Pentax K1000 35mm SLR camera.

January 21:  Finished reading and viewing the many excellent photos in "Jupiter's Travels In Camera" by Ted Simon.  This hardback book was published in 2013 to coincide with the 40th anniversary of his first round-the-world motorcycle trip that started in 1973.

Above:  Cover of book.

January 29:  Finished reading and viewing the many excellent photos in "Lone Rider-The Photographs" by Elspeth Beard.  This hardback book was published in 2021 and contains 450+ photographs from her 2 year round-the-world motorcycle journey (1982-1984).  I ordered the book on January 5th (before finishing reading "Lone Rider") and received it on January 24th.  Elspeth did an outstanding job on creating this book.

Looking back on 2023

February 11:  Jean and I purchased a new TV because the old 2008 Samsung 50" we had for over 14 years quit working.  The new TV is a LG - 65" Class C2 Series OLED evo 4K UHD Smart webOS TV, purchased from Best Buy.

Above:  LG-65" TV

March 6:  After reading about California Senator Dianne Feinstein (age 89) being hospitalizes with shingles I decided to bite the bullet and get my first shingles vaccination (two shots are now required).  The first shot was a Shingrix 50 MCG/0.5ML injection, the second shot should be sometime between the next two and six months (May 6th to September 6th).  This vaccine is more than 90% effective and protection last 4 to 5 years.

March 7:  Started radiation treatment, through April 12, about 5+ weeks.

April 7:  Went to the Hans Olson concert at Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) Music Theater in Phoenix.

Above:  My view at the MIM

April 10:  President Biden signed a bipartisan congressional resolution to end COVID-19 national emergency that was declared on March 1st of 2020 by President Trump.  More than 1.13 million people in the U.S. have died from COVID-19 over the last three years, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including 1,773 people in the week ending April 5.

April 27:  Finished reading "That's An Old Bike...Where You Headin'?" by Nick Adams, read this Kindle book on my iPhone 12.  The book is about a Canada coast-to-coast trip on a 50-year old Italian motorcycle (a 1972 Moto Guzzi Eldorado, V-Twin, air-cooled, 850 cc) by a retired guy that just turned 70 years of age.  Extremely interesting reading for me.  He also has an excellent 26-minute YouTube video on this trip at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JzTpAELS1HE .  This was the second Kindle book I’ve read by Nick Adams, the first was "Do It While You Still Can", which I read in December of 2021, the first book I ever read on a smart phone.  I wrote a short review of this book on Amazon.com at https://www.amazon.com/gp/customer-reviews/R1VY9CSAXC6IYT/ref=cm_cr_othr_d_rvw_ttl?ie=UTF8&ASIN=B0B6241JGG

Above:  Cover of the Kindle book.

May 4:  Finished reading "Coast to Coast on 2 Wheels" by Alan Taylor, read this Kindle book on my iPhone 12.  The book is about a Canadian man that had a coast-to-coast motorcycle ride on his bucket list.  He finally made it later in his life in 2009 on his 2003 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 Classic II.  He decided he wanted to do the trip on the United States side of the border as he thought the USA had more sights to see and more history to check out.  His ride was broken up into two parts, the first and shorter part was from his hometown in the Niagara Falls, Ontario area down to Buffalo, NY and then east to Maine and back into Canada for a wedding.  This part was done with his wife Shelley as a passenger and his friend Rob who rode his 2003 Suzuki 1500cc Intruder.  The second and longer part was done a little later with just his friend Rob, from Canada down into the United States and then west mostly along historic Route 66 ending up in Monterey, California.  Then they turned around and headed back east through the United States to their homes in Canada.  Interesting reading, lots of nice photos from both the author and his friend.  I wrote a short review of this book on Amazon.com at https://www.amazon.com/review/RM7NKGEZ4ROVM/ref=pe_1098610_137716200_cm_rv_eml_rv0_rv .

Above:  Cover of the Kindle book.

May 5:  The World Health Organization (WHO) ended the global emergency status for COVID-19 today more than three years after its original declaration on January 30, 2020, and said countries should now manage the virus that killed more than 6.9 million people along with other infectious diseases.

May 12:  Finished reading "The Old Man and The Sea" by Ernest Hemingway, I read this free-version Kindle book (in public domain) on my iPhone 12.  I don't normally read fiction but for some reason I always thought about reading this book.  An interesting story.

Above:  Cover of the Kindle book.

June 19:  Finished reading "South" by Sir Ernest Shackleton, I read the Kindle book on my iPhone 12.  I can see why this adventure is considered to be among the greatest survival stories of all time.  Hard to believe this crew of 28 survived all they went through.  Two days after leaving South Georgia, their ship the Endurance encountered polar pack ice and progress slowed to a crawl, and after about 5 weeks the ship was completely trapped in the ice.  After about 9 months the Endurance was crushed by the ice and finally sank about a month later, marooning the 28 men on the polar ice.  They all made it back to safety after being stranded for about a year and a half.

Above:  Cover of the Kindle book.

August 7:  Finished reading "Across America by Motor-Cycle" by C.K. Shepherd, I read the Kindle book on my iPhone 12.  The book is about a British man that made a coast-to-coast motorcycle ride in 1919, at the age of 34, from Manhattan, NY to San Francisco, CA.  He rode a 1919 Henderson Z-2-E four-cylinder motorcycle rated at about 14 horsepower. His distance covered was 50 miles shy of 5,000 miles and the trip took about 2 months.  Back in those days there were hardly any good roads for this trip.  A fairly interesting book with lots of details on how bad the roads were.  He camped out most nights.  The book was published in 1922, with a few photos, and interesting stories.

Above:  Cover of the Kindle book.

August 27:  Finished reading "James Dean-A Rebel's Life in Pictures by J.I. Baker and the editors of Life." Interesting reading and viewing.  Book gifted to me on August 5th by friend JIMeo Jeffers.

Above:  Cover of book.

August 29:  Went to the Sir Richard Bishop (of Sun City Girls) concert at Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) Music Theater in Phoenix.  Opening act was by Hans Olson.

Above:  Sir Richard Bishop

August 30:  Received second shingles vaccination, a Shingrix 50 MCG/0.5ML injection.  This vaccine is more than 90% effective and protection last 4 to 5 years.

November 6:  Pool remodel completed.  Signed contract with Sun Valley Pools (Lionel Arnoult) on 9-18-23, chip-out completed 9-26-23, tile installed 10-24-23, mini-pebble installed 10-30-23, pool remodel with start-up was completed 11-6-23, or about 7 weeks.  Would have been sooner but prior repair work was require, replacing pool pump valves and new skimmer, work done by Colin Irons Pool Service (Brian Sandoval), and repair work (all new DE filter elements, DE filter repair which included new manifold, o-ring, backwash valve) done by Pool Solutions AZ (Leonel Bejarano).

Above:  Remodeled pool, complete 11-6-23.

December 8:  Received an epidural steroid injection of lidocaine (numbing agent) and dexamethasone (steroid) into the epidural space.  The goal is to reduce the pain in my lower back.  Procedure was called L5-S1 ILESI (InterLaminar Epidural Steroid Injection) medial.

Note:  The results was an improvement, that is, less back pain when walking and standing.

December 16:  Finished reading "Dreaming of Jupiter" by Ted Simon. Book gifted to me on November 23 by friend Diane Waller.  In 2001, at the age of 69, Ted Simon decided to retrace his first round-the-world motorcycle journey that started in 1973.  For this second trip it took him 29 months, he covered 59,000 miles and 47 countries on a 1997 BMW R80 GS..

One interesting portion of the trip for me was for two months he was not riding solo.   Simon wrote "My very dear friend from Chile, Malú Sierra, the woman I love, has come to ride behind me in Thailand and India. It was not my idea. I think she's crazy. She has never been on a motorcycle in her life and now, aged 61, she wants to do this. But how could I stop her…?"

But that relationship did not work out after they came back to California, the book didn't explain why, Simon just wrote "...it didn't work."

Above:  Book cover.

December 21:  Received flu (regular dose, not the senior dose) and COVID-19 (Moderna aka Spikevax) shots at Safeway on Frank Lloyd Wright Blvd.

Looking back on 2022

January 11:  Finished reading "132 Days-A Journey, A Journal and some Whiskey" by Mike Krabal, read this Kindle book on my iPhone 12.  Krabal unsatisfied with his life, decided to make a cross country motorcycle ride from West Virginia on a 2003 Yamaha FZ1 (998 cc) that he named the Grey Goose.  His total miles was over 17,000 for the round trip.  I wrote a short review of the book on Amazon.  Click here to read the review.

Above:  Cover of the Kindle book.

January 15:  Finished reading "Southwest by TWO-STROKE" by Brian Franzen, Michael Newlun & Jeffrey Ross, read this Kindle book on my iPhone 12.  Interesting reading for me as a lot of the stories were about Arizona (e.g., Two-Strokes from Arizona to Canada), plus all the motorcycles I've owned had two-stroke engines.  Most of these stories were written many years after they occurred, I was impressed with the details the authors could remember.

Above:  Cover of the Kindle book.

January 26:  Finished reading "Against the Wind-A Motorcycle Ride" by Dale Arenson.  Started this book on my iPhone 12 and finished on my 2008 Mac Pro.  This ride, by a guy about 70 years old, was from Cordes Lake, Arizona to Canadian, Oklahoma for a reunion with his motorcycle club,  He rode a 2007 Ultima chopper.  I enjoyed reading about this guys trip.  His total round trip was 16 days.  He didn't mentioned his total miles but with with all the side trips and traffic problems I'm guessing 2,500 miles or more.  Lots of excellent photos.

Above:  Cover of the Kindle book.

February 2:  Finished reading "Solo-A Motorcycle Journey" by Pete FourWinds, read this Kindle book on my iPhone 12.  An interesting short motorcycle trip report (9,500+ words, 25 Kindle pages, 11 chapters) by a 24-year old single man just discharged from the Navy in 1997, picks up his 1996 Kawasaki Vulcan 500 LTD motorcycle in San Diego, California and makes a 9-day ride (about 3,500 miles with side trips) back to his home town in Rockland, Massachusetts, next to Boston.  The author reminded me of a composite of two guys I grew up with, Garland who was also in the Navy and Walter who also made several motorcycle road trips.  The Kindle book was published in 2020 so I’m amazed that the author remembered so much about his 1997 trip.  I enjoyed reading about this trip, even though it had no photos.  The author referred to the ride as one of the greatest adventures of his life.

Above:  Cover of the Kindle book.

February 4:  Finished reading "Chasing America" by Tracy Farr, read this Kindle book on my iPhone 12.  The 53-year old author decided in 2015 he wanted to break the Guinness World Record for the Longest Journey by Motorcycle in a Single Country, which was set in 2013 by two guy riding 20,727 miles across China.  He didn't break this record but did document his very interesting ride all over the United States.  His motorcycle was a 2005 Honda Shadow VLX and already had 90,000 miles on it.  He traveled 19,190 miles (7 legs) in 56 days and rode through 43 states.  He started in his hometown in Paris, Texas.  No photos in the book, but 208 posted at his flickr site.

His blog about his motorcycle journey can be found at:

http://www.thefarrplace.com/search/label/Chasing%20America.

208 photos from his journey can be found at:

https://www.flickr.com/photos/tracyfarr/albums/72157651897128817/

Above:  Cover of the Kindle book.

February 8:  Finished reading the Kindle book "Oracle, Arizona and Beyond" by John Stuart Watkins. This book has nothing to do with motorcycle travels (the cover threw me), just a picture-story-book of places to visit, sites to see, and things to do in and around Oracle, Arizona.  It’s possible that a future motorcycle ride on my part will take me through Oracle so I’ll keep some of this information in mind, perhaps a stop at the Oracle Patio Café, or maybe the Oracle Inn?  The  Florence Museum also seems interesting. I definitely want to do a motorcycle ride to Bisbee, Arizona which this book covers with a lot of information and photos.

Above:  Cover of the Kindle book.

February 24:  Finished reading the Kindle book "An American Motorcycling Adventure" by John Ward on my iPhone 12.  Written by a 60-year old man from England that ships his 13-year old 2002 Honda Deauville 650cc shaft-driven V-Twin motorcycle to Chicago, Illinois and starts a 13-week, 13,000 mile trip around the United States.  Three years earlier he had undergone open heart surgery for a quadruple heart bypass.  His trip is in 3 legs, the first leg is his solo ride from Chicago to San Francisco, California where he picks up his wife who flew in from England.  The second leg is the ride with his wife as passenger from San Francisco across the US to Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Canada and then back to Houston, Texas where his wife caught a flight back to England, and the third leg is riding solo again from Houston through the southern states and up into the eastern states where he ends up shipping his bike from New Jersey back to England.  A very interesting read, well written, lots of traveling information, and a few nice photos.

Above:  Cover of the Kindle book.

March 13:  Finished reading the Kindle book "Ghosts in the Wind - In the Footsteps of Lewis & Clark" by Charles L Schiereck on my iPhone 12.  About a a 68-year old man that makes a round-trip, cross-country motorcycle ride in 2018 starting in New Jersey to the the Pacific Ocean in Washington.  He rode a 2017 Harley Davidson Freewheeler.

Above:  Cover of the Kindle book.

March 22:  Started wearing Phonak Audeo Paradise P90-RT RIC Hearing aids.  But returned them April 7 primarily due to poor support service.  And the Phonak app didn't work properly and neither did the TV connector.

Above:  Phonak P90 hearing aids.

March 28:  Finished reading the Kindle book "Ride On" by John Black on my iPhone 12.  About a 72+ year old man from Poteau Oklahoma that makes 3 rides across North America on his 2017 Harley Davidson Ultra Classic LTD motorcycle.  He did these rides over a period of 3 years (2017-2019) and covered a total of 49,470 miles.

Above:  Cover of the Kindle book.

May 24:  Purchased a pair of Oticon More miniRITE T hearing aids from Hearing Health in Scottsdale.

Above: Oticon More miniRITE hearing aids.

October 17:  Just a news item of interest, as of Oct. 17, 2022 you can officially purchase over-the-counter hearing aids in stores and online, without needing to see a doctor, an audiologist, or a licensed hearing aid specialist.

October 27:  Received 4th Pfizer (Bivalent) COVID-19 shot at Safeway.  Plus got the yearly flu shot.

October 29:  Finished reading the Kindle book "Let's Ride" by David Donaghe on my iPhone 12.  The book consisted of three separate trips across the United States, from Barstow California to Alabama for annual meetings of his motorcycle club, during the years of 2017, 2018 and 2021.  He was 59 years of age when he made his first cross-country ride.  His first trip was on his 2008 Harley Davidson Road glide and his next two trips was on his 2014 Triumph Rocket Three.  Interesting reading, lots of nice photos.  In his book he writes “If riding a motorcycle across the country is something you would like to do then you will enjoy this book. Saddle up and Let’s Ride."

Above:  MetalPrint gift from Jimmy Jeffers.

September 12:  Saw two young bobcats on the roof of our house This is a zoom shot (30x plus) of one of them, but stylized using the Prisma software since the original photo wasn't that sharp.

Above:  Stylized photo of young bobcat on roof.

September 25:  Received another 11" x 14" Metalprint wall-mounting photo from Jimmy Jeffers, of Jimmy and Roland Hedberg also at the SuperTest Lounge.

October 8:  Purchased iPhone 12.  Previous iPhone SE (purchased in May 2016) had water damage due to an unplanned dunk in the swimming pool on October 3.

Above:  Size comparison of new iPhone 12 and old iPhone SE purchased in 2016.

October 13: Received COVID-19 vaccine (Pfizer) booster shot at Safeway.

October 24:  Wrote journal on my 2017 Globe Triangle Motorcycle Ride, click here to read.

October 31:  Wrote journal on my 2016 Laughlin Motorcycle Ride with Walter Cress, click here to read.

November 9:  Finally got the water coloring (14" x 22") of the saguaro framed that I received from Diane Waller on January 4th, the delay was due to not wanting to go out of the house due to COVID-19.

Above:  Painting by Diane Waller (14" x 22")

November 26:  Received award from the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame for "Webmaster, Photographer & Technical Advisor from 2010 to 2021."  I resigned effective at the end of 2021, after 11+ years.

Above:  Award from the Arizona Blues Hall of Fame.

November 30:  Started ordering metal print photos for some friends and relatives.  Ordered gifts for Hans Olson, Walter Cress (2 photos), Diane Waller and Scott King, Garland Tobin, Phyllis/Lesley/Kyle, Bob Ray, and Connie Cress.

December 1:  First confirmed case of Omicron COVID-19 variant detected in the United States (San Francisco).

December 8:  First case of Omicron COVID-19 variant detected in Arizona, in Yavapai county.

December 19:  Finished reading "Do It While You Still Can-motorcycle escapades and trbulatons" by Nick Adams, read this Kindle book on my iPhone 12, first book I've read on a smart phone.  Briefly it's a collection of motorcycle travel stories and a grab-bag of bits and pieces the author has written and published in magazines over the years, but all interesting reading for me.  He has owned a bunch of motorcycles but the Moto Guzzi brand seemed to be his favorite.  I wrote a very short review of the book at Amazon, click here to read.

Above:  Cover of the Kindle book.

December 23:  Found out Walter Cress was diagnosed with ALS.

December 25: Finished reading "Waypoints -Volume 1"  by Bud Miller, a collection of 24 stories first published in RoadRUNNER magazine.  Read Kindle book on my iPhone 12.

Above:  Cover of the Kindle book.

December 26:  Finished "Motorcycling Through Midlife" by John Metzger.  Read Kindle book on my iPhone 12.  An interesting read, although not what I was expecting.  This was more of an autobiography covering the bikes he has ridden in his life, the types of riding he has done, with a lot of philosophy thrown in.  Zero photos, zero description of any road trips, etc.

Above:  Cover of the Kindle book.

December 29:  Finished "Weekend Motorcycle Tours in Arizona & New Mexico" by Michael D. Kuehn.  Read Kindle book on my iPhone 12.  Interesting read about 6 weekend rides the author took back in the mid-1990s, he had them published in magazines back then and later published them in this Kindle book in 2012.  Most of the rides were in New Mexico but one was in Arizona, a 600-mile round-trip ride up from the Tucson desert to the mountainous pine forests of Flagstaff.  He mentioned riding a Harley Davidson and the one photo of his bike shows a Sportster model.  Book contains a few photos and maps.  I’ve ridden part of his 300-mile Arizona ride, the part from Hayden to Strawberry, and also the ride to the Tom Mix Memorial near Florence.

Above:  Cover of the Kindle book.

December 31:  Giving up on reading "Old Man on a Bike" by Simon Gandolfi after about 15% of the way through. Finding it boring and definitely not what I expected the book to be, just losing interest in what this guy was writing, I feel it was poorly written and life is to short to finish reading a book that doesn't interest you.  I'm surprised this book got a 4+ star rating on Amazon, lots of readers loved the book.

Looking back on 2019

Started out this year with a new Hans Olson wall calendar, a calendar I make each year with photos from Hans Olson gigs.  I've been doing this since  2008 and this was calendar #11.  This was the last one made with the Apple printing service as they discontinued that service in September of 2018.  See calendar cover below.
Above:  2019 Hans Olson 13" x 10" wall calendar.
January 6:  Finally finished Skunk Works book by Ben R. Rich.  This book was a gift from long-time-Florida friend Jimmy Jeffers, he sent me this book in November of 2017.  I had a copy of the book from 1995 from when it first came out and had already read it.  But in December of 2018 I decided to reread the book, but didn't finish it until January of 2019.

Above:  Jon Fuller starting his presentation.
February 9:  Sold the 1968 Yamaha DT-1 250 cc dirt bike that I've had since 1972.  I always wanted to get it running again but finally realize that was not going to happen, so I sold it via Craigslist for $200, mainly to declutter the garage.
Above:  1968 Yamaha DT-1 250 cc dirt bike (shown without the engine).
February 13:  Went to the Time Out Lounge in Tempe with Bob Ray and Jack Shell to catch a Hans Olson gig.
